D onald Trump’s return to the White House as the 47th president of the United States marks a political comeback unlike any other. But his inaugural address, filled with self-aggrandisement, sweeping authoritarian promises, and delusional claims about his leadership, highlights something far deeper and more disturbing than mere rhetoric.

Trump’s speech was less a policy blueprint and more a manifesto of a man consumed by his own mythology. This leader fancies himself a “strongman” in the vein of the very autocrats he has openly admired for years.

This is not just politics as usual. This is a presidency built on a cult of personality, where Trump’s delusions about himself and his place in history take precedence over reality, democracy, or even the rule of law.

A Messiah Complex: Trump’s Divine ‘Mission’

Trump’s speech was littered with references to his supposed personal destiny, with the man himself adopting a messianic tone that bordered on the absurd. At one point, he claimed, “I was saved by God to make America great again,” referencing the assassination attempt on his life during the 2024 campaign. This claim, delivered with dramatic flair, paints Trump not just as a leader but as a figure chosen by divine intervention to save the nation.

This messiah-like self-perception is not new for Trump. In 2019, he referred to himself as the Chosen One while discussing trade with China. His willingness to see himself as a singular, almost supernatural force in American politics has been a hallmark of his leadership style. For his followers, this rhetoric reinforces the idea that Trump is above the fray of ordinary politics — a saviour, not a president.

But this self-aggrandising delusion also feeds into his broader disregard for democratic norms. By framing himself as a uniquely ordained leader, Trump positions any opposition — whether from political rivals, the media, or even the judiciary — as not just wrong but illegitimate. There is no room for dissent in his worldview because he alone embodies the nation’s will.



Trump’s Love Affair with Dictators

Throughout his political career, Trump has openly admired authoritarian leaders, expressing respect — and even envy — for their unchecked power. During his first term, he praised Vladimir Putin as a strong leader, marvelled at Kim Jong Un’s grip on North Korea, and called Xi Jinping’s indefinite rule in China great. He even admitted calling him king of China and wanting my people to treat him with the same adoration shown to Kim Jong Un in state-choreographed rallies.

In this second inaugural address, Trump’s rhetoric seemed to channel these authoritarian tendencies. He railed against a “radical and corrupt establishment”, accusing his political opponents of “betrayals” and painting himself as the only figure capable of restoring order. His promise to end what he called the “weaponisation of the Justice Department” sounds less like a commitment to impartial justice and more like a vow to use the government as a tool to crush his enemies — a hallmark of every dictator he has openly admired.

Further reinforcing this is his pledge to create a new Department of Government Efficiency, a name that evokes chilling echoes of autocratic regimes consolidating power under the guise of “streamlining”. Critics argue that such a department could serve as a vehicle for Trump to bypass congressional oversight, politicise civil service, and centralise power in the executive branch, which moves more befitting of a dictatorship than a democracy.

Personality Politics

Trump’s inaugural speech was filled with references to his own greatness. He described his 2024 election win as “the greatest and most consequential in the history of our country” and claimed a “mandate” to reverse the “horrible betrayal” of past administrations. While every president likes to claim a strong mandate, Trump’s exaggeration borders on delusion.

His tendency to inflate his accomplishments isn’t just a character flaw — it’s central to the cult of personality he has built around himself. Trump’s version of reality isn’t grounded in facts or measurable success. Instead, it’s shaped by his need to constantly project strength, even when that projection comes at the expense of truth.

What makes this cult of personality particularly dangerous is how it has reshaped American politics. To his most ardent supporters, Trump is America. Criticism of him is seen not as a political debate but as an attack on the country itself. This dynamic creates a feedback loop in which Trump’s base becomes more radicalised while he becomes more emboldened to pursue increasingly extreme measures to consolidate power.

The End of ‘Wokeness’ or the Start of Cultural Repression?

Trump’s authoritarian tendencies are perhaps most evident in his cultural agenda, which he frames as a ‘war against wokeness’. In his inaugural address, he declared that “there are only two genders, male and female” and pledged to enshrine this into U.S. government policy. He also vowed to end the teaching of what he called “radical political theories” in schools, claiming that America’s education system teaches children to “hate our country”.

Trump’s authoritarian tendencies are perhaps most evident in his cultural agenda, which he frames as a war against “wokeness.” In his inaugural address, he declared that “there are only two genders, male and female” and pledged to enshrine this into U.S. government policy. By eliminating DEI programmes and rolling back protections for transgender individuals, Trump is taking direct aim at decades of progress in civil rights.

These statements reflect an overt attempt to legislate cultural and personal identity in a way that harkens back to repressive regimes. By denying the existence of transgender and nonbinary people and eliminating discussions about systemic inequality, Trump is not just stoking division — he is actively erasing marginalised voices from the public sphere.

Critics warn that such policies will have devastating consequences. Civil rights organisations have already condemned Trump’s rhetoric as a direct attack on LGBTQ+ communities, while educators argue that his approach undermines critical thinking and academic freedom. But for Trump, this cultural war isn’t about policy — it’s about power. By turning wokeness into a catch-all enemy, he gives his supporters a rallying cry that justifies authoritarian measures in the name of “common sense”.

The Immigration Crackdown: A Return to Cruelty

Trump’s vision for immigration policy, as outlined in his address, marks a dramatic escalation of his hardline approach from his first term. Declaring a national emergency at the southern border, he promised to “immediately halt illegal entry” and begin the process of deporting “millions and millions of criminal aliens.” This sweeping pledge recalls the most extreme elements of his first presidency, including family separations and mass deportations, which drew widespread condemnation from human rights organisations.

“We will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country,” he said, likening immigration to a military assault. Such language is not only inflammatory but dangerously reductive, equating families fleeing violence with armed enemies.

His plan also includes reinstating his controversial ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, which forces asylum seekers to wait in dangerous conditions outside U.S. borders, and invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to grant the federal government unprecedented powers to target and expel immigrants. Critics argue these policies amount to a dehumanising assault on immigrant communities and will exacerbate the suffering of vulnerable individuals fleeing violence and persecution.

Beyond the humanitarian implications, Trump’s immigration rhetoric also serves a political purpose: stoking fear and scapegoating immigrants to rally his base. By labelling immigrants as criminals and casting the southern border as an “invasion”, Trump taps into nativist sentiments while sidelining any serious conversation about comprehensive immigration reform.

Even more extreme, Trump repeated his long-standing goal of ending birthright citizenship, a constitutional guarantee under the 14th Amendment that grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. “We will finally stop the practice of automatic citizenship for the children of illegal aliens”, he announced, framing it as an affront to American sovereignty. This proposal has been widely criticised as both unconstitutional and unworkable, with legal experts warning that any attempt to unilaterally alter the 14th Amendment would face immediate legal challenges.

The World Rejoices — But Not in a Good Way

America’s adversaries will undoubtedly welcome Trump’s return to power and his embrace of a strongman persona. Authoritarian regimes in Russia, China, and beyond thrive when democratic institutions are weakened, and global norms are abandoned.

For Vladimir Putin, Trump’s rhetoric about territorial expansion and disdain for NATO is a gift. By normalising the idea of reclaiming land, Trump implicitly justifies Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its threats against other Eastern European nations. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping is likely celebrating Trump’s abandonment of climate policies, which cedes leadership on green energy to China.

Amid the bombastic rhetoric of “making America great again” Trump’s most eyebrow-raising promise was his commitment to territorial expansion. He suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and lamented the United States’ historic “loss” of the Panama Canal, vowing to “take it back.” While Trump stopped short of naming specific territorial ambitions, the invocation of manifest destiny — alongside repeated references to growing America’s territory, saying that the United States “will once again consider itself a growing nation, one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations, and carries our flag into new and beautiful horizons” — has set alarm bells ringing.

Such language invites speculation about Trump’s intent. Is he eyeing Greenland, a territory he famously sought to purchase during his first term? Does he mean annexing parts of Mexico or even looking northward to Canada? Whatever the specifics, the mere suggestion of expansion is likely to provoke widespread unease among neighbours and allies. Canada and Mexico, America’s two largest trading partners, could see this as a direct threat to their sovereignty.

Even smaller authoritarian regimes, such as the one in Venezuela, may see Trump’s rhetoric as a green light to pursue their own oppressive agendas. When the leader of the free world openly admires strongmen and normalises authoritarianism, it creates a ripple effect that weakens democracy everywhere.



A Dictator in All But Name?

Donald Trump’s second inaugural speech was not just a celebration of his return to power — it was a declaration of intent to remake America in his own image. From delusional claims about his divine mission to his admiration for authoritarian leaders, Trump is positioning himself as a strongman who answers to no one — not Congress, not the courts, and certainly not the facts.

As his cult of personality grows stronger and his rhetoric becomes more detached from reality, the risks to America’s democracy — and the world — have never been higher. Trump’s vision is not one of unity or progress but one of division, repression, and unchecked power. Whether he can fully realise this vision remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Trump presidency is no longer just about governance — it’s about the man, his mythology, and his unrelenting quest for dominance.

“Thank you. Thank you very much, everybody. Well, thank you very, very much. Vice President Vance, Speaker Johnson, Senator Thune, Chief Justice Roberts, justices of the United States Supreme Court, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and my fellow citizens.”

“The Golden Age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. For many years, a radical and corrupt establishment has extracted power and wealth from our citizens, while the pillars of our society lay broken and seemingly in complete disrepair. We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad. It fails to protect our magnificent, law-abiding American citizens, but provide sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals, many from prisons and mental institutions that have illegally entered our country from all over the world. We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defence of foreign borders, but refuses to defend American borders or more importantly, its own people. Our country can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency, as recently shown by the wonderful people of North Carolina, been treated so badly. And other states who are still suffering from a hurricane that took place many months ago. Or more recently in Los Angeles, where we are watching fires still tragically burn from weeks ago without even a token of defence. They’re raging through the houses and communities, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in our country, some of whom are sitting here right now. They don’t have a home any longer. That’s interesting, but we can’t let this happen. Everyone is unable to do anything about it. That’s going to change. We have a public health system that does not deliver in times of disaster, yet more money is spent on it than any country anywhere in the world. And we have an education system that teaches our children to be ashamed of themselves, in many cases to hate our country despite the love that we try so desperately to provide to them. All of this will change starting today, and it will change very quickly.”

And that includes the United States Navy and above all, China is operating the Panama Canal and we didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama and we’re taking it back.”
