T o enhance transparency and safety within healthcare environments, a petition is currently urging the UK Government to mandate the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to systematically “monitor and report on COVID-19 infections occurring in healthcare settings and advises on how to prevent and control infection in establishments such as hospitals, care homes and schools.”

The initiative highlights the need for robust data collection to inform infection control measures and safeguard vulnerable populations.

The petition centres on extending the UK’s policies on healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) to encompass COVID-19 explicitly. The call to action reflects concerns that gaps in routine surveillance hinder UKHSA’s ability to assess the effectiveness of current infection prevention strategies.

Quoting UKHSA, the petition underlines that “preventing and reducing rates of HCAI involves infection prevention and control, using evidence-based interventions.” It further emphasises the importance of surveillance programmes, which provide vital insights into problem areas and the success of control measures. Including COVID-19 in such monitoring would ensure that UKHSA has comprehensive data to manage risks in hospitals, care homes, and schools.

The petition comes amidst ongoing concerns over the management of COVID-19 in healthcare settings, where vulnerable individuals are at heightened risk. Expanding surveillance to include COVID-19 aligns with existing UKHSA strategies but requires governmental support to implement fully.

Public health experts have long stressed the importance of robust data systems.

The petition serves as a rallying point for public action. As with all Westminster petitions, reaching 10,000 signatures will prompt a government response, while achieving 100,000 signatures will secure a parliamentary debate. With public concern over healthcare safety remaining high, this initiative has the potential to spark significant discourse.

By supporting this petition, you can contribute to safeguarding not only patients but also healthcare staff and the wider community.
