ON THIS DAY...
- ... in 1649, during the Massacre of Drogheda in Ireland, Oliver Cromwell, the English military and political leader, killed approximately 3,000 royalists.
- In 1906, Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence leader, coined the term Satyagraha (a Sanskrit word meaning “truth force”) to describe the Non-Violence movement he led in South Africa.
- In 1926, Spain decided to leave the League of Nations due to Germany’s entry into the organisation.
- In 1939, Iraq and Saudi Arabia declared war on Nazi Germany, joining the Allies in World War II.
- In 1945, Hideki Tojo, the Japanese Prime Minister during most of World War II, attempted suicide to avoid facing a war crimes tribunal, but his attempt failed. He was later hanged.
