S ir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has announced that the party intends to abandon its longstanding pledge to abolish university tuition fees in England.
Starmer justified his decision, claiming that the current economic situation necessitated that the party “moves on” from the idea.
He confirmed that the promise to abolish tuition fees, which he made during his bid for leadership in 2020, would be discarded and that the party would “explore options” for funding universities.
During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Starmer contended that the current system was unfair and inadequate, failing to support students or universities. He pledged that his party would formulate a “fairer solution” in the coming weeks.
