WHO urges China to provide more details about its COVID outbreak

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a stern and formal appeal to China to provide more detailed information regarding its COVID outbreak, as travel is expected to surge in the lead up to the nation’s new year celebrations.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus has requested a breakdown of cases by province, as well as the strains of the virus, during a phone call with Ma Xiaowei, the director of China’s health commission. This appeal follows previous calls for greater transparency.

The WHO has expressed its concern that the lack of information could lead to a greater spread of the virus, particularly as the country prepares to celebrate the Lunar New Year. With millions of people travelling to visit family and friends, the potential for increased transmission is a serious cause for concern.

The WHO is urging China to provide more detailed information about the outbreak, and to take all necessary steps to prevent its spread.
