S upporters of Just Stop Oil, a coalition of groups working together to demand that the government immediately halt all future licensing and consents for the exploration, development and production of fossil fuels in the UK, have joined a national demonstration with thousands of people to demand an immediate General Election and action to tackle the cost of living and climate crisis by ending new fossil fuel licences and consents.
People from all over the country, trade unions and community organisations have been taking part in a march from Embankment to Trafalgar Square, organised by the People’s Assembly campaign group.

Around 150 Just Stop Oil supporters peeled off from the main demonstration and marched around Trafalgar Square repeatedly sitting down in the road with their banners. Police have made five arrests. Joshua Smith, Louis McKechnie, Michelle Charlesworth, Morgan Trowland, and Marcus Decker are in prison on remand or serving sentences for taking action to demand that the government halts new oil and gas licences.
“But it’s worse than that: after decades of climate misinformation and delay, we face an existential crisis. We are going to lose all we hold dear. We need to ditch new oil and gas now and we need to change our politics so that in future everyone can have a say in the decisions that will determine the future of humanity.” — Indigo Rumblelow, spokesperson for Just Stop Oil.

The climate activists also explain that they continue to “peacefully resist the government’s plans to licence over 100 new oil and gas projects by 2025, and its failure to fulfil its promise to help people with their skyrocketing energy bills.”
According to them, millions of people all over the country will be forced into poverty because of failing government policies that will also force them to choose between heating, eating, or providing the basic essentials for themselves and their families.
The protest on Saturday followed a short pause by Just Stop Oil after four weeks of continuous climate protests by supporters of the campaign group during which the police made 684 arrests. Since the campaign began on 1 April, Just Stop Oil supporters have been arrested nearly 2,000 times.
