Shauna Aminath, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the Maldives, tweeted on Saturday her deep disappointment at the failure of world leaders to come to a proper agreement at COP26.

“Either we kill coal or coal will kill us. A phase-down of coal won’t save the Maldives and island nations.

“We made incremental progress in Glasgow – this progress is not in line with the urgency and scale required. What is balanced and pragmatic to other parties will not help the Maldives adapt in time. It will be too late for the Maldives.

“For some, loss and damage may be the beginning of conversation and dialogue. But for us, this is a matter of survival.
